What Happens When Your Child Turns 18?
Your child turning 18 is an exciting time in any family's life. It means that your son or daughter is moving into adulthood and is probably ready to transition from high school to college or the working world. Among all the changes and excitement that you and your child are going through are changes in the rules and laws governing your child’s health information and medical records.
On your child’s 18th birthday, Federal law dictates that doctors, nurses, and medical offices can no longer discuss your child's health conditions, medical records or illness with the parents. We can only discuss those matters with the patient themselves. When you call to book an appointment, speak with nurse triage or a physician, or request copies of medical records our staff will have to decline your request unless your son or daughter has signed a release giving us permission to discuss these matters.
Your child must be specific in the release as to what information we can discuss and release to you. Your child has the right to notify us that they do not want any information released to parents or only certain information. North Shore Pediatrics has developed a form for your child to complete and sign and return to us. We will keep this form on record in your child's chart and it can stay in effect until it is changed by your child or until he/she has transitioned to an adult care provider.
You may find a printable copy of our form here. |
