๐ Back to School: Setting Your Child Up for a Healthy & Successful Year
A new school year means new teachers, new routines, busy schedules, and plenty of excitement! As families prepare to head back to the classroom, itโs also a great time to make sure your child is physically and emotionally ready for the year ahead.
๐ฉบ Stay Up to Date on Checkups & Vaccines
Annual well-child visits are an important part of keeping kids healthy. These visits allow your childโs healthcare provider to monitor growth and development, discuss nutrition, sleep, school performance, and emotional health, and make sure recommended vaccinations are up to date. If your child plays sports, be sure any required physical forms are completed before the season begins.
๐ด Get Sleep Schedules Back on Track
Summer often means later nights and slower mornings. Gradually returning to a consistent bedtime and wake-up time can make the transition back to school much easier. Getting enough sleep is important for your childโs mood, attention, learning, behavior, and overall health.
๐ Fuel Their School Day
A nutritious breakfast can help children start their day ready to learn. Encourage a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and plenty of water throughout the day. Packing a reusable water bottle is an easy way to encourage good hydration at school.
๐ง Check In on Emotional Health
Back-to-school season can bring excitement, but it can also bring anxiety or stress. Changes in routine, academic expectations, friendships, and starting a new school can feel overwhelming. Make time to ask your child how they are feeling and remind them that itโs okay to talk about worries or concerns.
Watch for significant changes in sleep, appetite, mood, behavior, or interest in activities. If you are concerned about how your child is coping, reach out to their healthcare provider for support.
๐งผ Prevent the Back-to-School Germ Exchange
Classrooms mean lots of kids sharing the same spacesโand plenty of germs! Remind children to wash their hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, avoid sharing drinks and utensils, and stay home when they are sick.
๐ Start the Year with Healthy Routines
Consistent routines can help children feel prepared and secure. Establish regular times for homework, meals, physical activity, screen time, relaxation, and sleep. Even small routines can make busy school days feel much more manageable.
